2010 Abstracts of HITS Projects

Amarillo College

To improve students' understanding in the area of assessment with a collaborative active learning experience that will capture their attention by creating an interactive patient electronic record (EHR).

Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs

Integrate informatics throughout the new BSN to DNP curriculum to be initiated fall 2010.  Our goal is for our graduates to not only have knowledge of informatics applications but be prepared to apply informatics easily and seamlessly in their DNP practice.

Felician College

Design and develop a telehealth program that will allow students to assess, critically think and utilize technology to teach and counsel clients in outpatient settings.

George Fox University

Establish interactive patient care simulation experiences in fundamentals, medical/surgical, and maternity nursing curriculum. In each situation, cultural, ethical, and/or spiritual care objectives will be embedded.

Husson University

A multi-pronged effort addressing several initiatives: to expand simulation program, to integrate PDA program, to acquire and integrate an Electronic Health Record (EHR) and create simulation framework based on Quality & Safety for Nurses (QSEN).

Indiana University South Bend

Incorporate the Electronic Medical Record (EMR)  into our existing multiple patient simulations.  This will enhance fidelity and prepare graduates who are skilled and confident in the use of EMR.

Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing

This project uses a web-based approach to develop online modules for teaching, learning and communicating Evidence Based Practice (EBP) projects.  The web-based approach supports collaboration between education and practice by making student EBP project available to nursing units.

McNeese State University

Train psychiatric nurse practitioner students in telemental health to improve access to care and to enhance students' technologic training.

Messiah College

Develop new pedagogy for quality improvement of therapeutic interactions among nursing students across a psychiatric nursing course based on evidence from curriculum integration of various technologies.

Michigan State University

Incorporate a simulated electronic health record into the primary care nurse practitioner curriculum. Students access the record remotely to develop knowledge and skills needed to provide safe care and met meaningful use criteria.

Middle Tennessee State University

Introduce simulation early in the curriculum via the fundamentals clinical courses utilizing high fidelity simulation manikins and equipment. QSEN competencies will be used to create assignments and case studies.

Mount Marty College

Our primary goal for our project is to provide a reliable method for assessing student competence in three focused areas: cardiac, neuro and interdisciplinary communication, using simulation.

North Georgia College and State University & Brenau University

Develop scenarios to replicate advanced practice clinical experiences and develop quality improvement initiatives in the simulation center. First and second year FNP students will care for simulated patients appropriate for their level--documenting all actions on a simulated patient record as well as completing a guided reflection on their performance.

Northwestern State University of Louisiana

Drive College of Nursing and Allied Health (CONAH) culture change with nursing informatics as a change agent by establishing the Cyber Innovation Center (CIC) and improving access and enriching educational experience of students across multiple programs. By this coordinated approach, will use technology integration in support of learning and providing real time informatics integration across program curricula.

Norwich University

This project focuses on curriculum innovation in a fundamentals of nursing course. Students will work simultaneously in pairs and provide care for one of six unique patients using simulation.

Presbyterian School of Nursing at Queens University of Charlotte

Using Second Life®, a 3-dimensional (3D) virtual world, nursing students in their second semester of a baccalaureate nursing program, will be asked to participate in a virtual scenario with a client-avatar experiencing an acute alteration in mental health. The goal is to determine if the use of 3D simulation is an effective adjunct to traditional methods of content delivery in a mental health nursing course.

Queensborough Community College

Develop a survey/tool to evaluate the type and features of an EHR for use in a nursing education setting. It also will provide initial & ongoing faculty development to inform and support the integration of nursing informatics throughout the curriculum.

Rhode Island College

http://www.ric.edu/whatsnews/details.php?News_ID=920.

Integrate Health Informatics Technology into the nursing school curriculum by employing a sandbox (server space) for simulated Veterans Affairs Computerized Patient Record System, thus providing high fidelity simulation. The sandbox functionality will enhance integration of the National Patient Safety Goals in all simulations.

Suffolk County Community College

Design a template for the integration of health informatics and technology into nursing clinical courses and  investigation of mobile telephone applications for nursing education --- beyond the books into serious games. Where's the app for that?

Three Rivers Community College

Facilitate faculty to embed simulation into the curriculum. This will provide the students with multiple simulation experiences throughout the program.

University of Colorado College of Nursing

This project focuses on coordinating the use of high fidelity simulation and an electronic health record (EHR) in an unfolding case study. It will provide pre-licensure students the opportunity to care for a simulated patient over time, using an EHR, with enhanced elements.

University of Kansas School of Nursing

Web based learning modules and electronic discussion boards, will enhance the capstone preceptor's ability to facilitate development in the clinical arena. The goal is to foster the preceptor's role in modeling knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to meet capstone course expectations.

University of Texas at Tyler

A virtual reality immersion approach will be used to create learning activities for graduate and undergraduate students using Second Life. The graduate experience will consist of a virtual poster presentation; the undergraduate experience will be a clinical experience using a Virtual Hospital.

Wright State University

Integrate simulation in nursing curriculum beginning with pediatrics and community health.  Community health simulation will also include Telehealth and the use of the Smart House Living Laboratory.
